Chapter
History
December 3, 1951 was a red letter day for twelve
young women who had been inducted into Delta
Sigma Theta some years earlier as undergraduate
sorors. They had been initiated in various
college chapters and were anxious to formulate a
cohesive group as they continued to keep the
spark of dedication alive. An application was
made to National headquarters in February 1951
and the charter was granted on the above date.
The regional director, Soror Pauline Weeden,
accompanied by Soror Helen Edmonds, established
the chapter under the name Delta Kappa Sigma.
Under the nomenclature established by Grand
Chapter, the name was later changed to
Lawrenceville Alumnae. Immediately following the
chartering, five ladies who had been instructed
in the cardinal principles of Delta Sigma Theta
by the chartered group were initiated by the
regional director. They were: Jamesetta Liddell
Jones, Iris Lucille Jones, Lucille Edmonds
Thompson, Frances Ashton Thurman and Carrie
Brown Walker.

The chapter made an impact on the Saint Paul's
College community as well as Southside
Virginia. We were instrumental in bringing a
campus-based chapter to the college in the early
50's, Delta Omicron and worked in conjunction
with the undergraduate sorors in service related
projects.
Over the years, the sorority's commitment to
public service has persisted. We supported the
United Negro College Fund through the Saint
Paul's College Campaign contributing over
$20,000. A Biennial Debutante Cotillion is held
for the purpose of expanding and enriching
cultural experiences for young ladies in
Southside Virginia high schools. Since 1958
over 800 young ladies have participated in this
event. Proceeds from this activity have been
used to fund scholarships and support other
public service projects. The chapter has
awarded over numerous college scholarships over
the past 50 years. Through the years, we have
conducted Teen Lift seminars and college campus
tours where youth have had the opportunity to
interact and are enlightened through workshops,
which address issues that affect them. Since
1996, the chapter has established the Delta
Academy "Preparing Young Ladies for the 21st
Century" at Sturgeon Elementary, Meherrin
Powellton Elementary and James Solomon Russell
Junior High Schools.
The chapter has continued to grow in number and
strength, at present there are 70 active
members. |
